A single-tooth root canal in Chennai costs anywhere from ₹3,500 at a budget neighbourhood clinic to ₹15,000+ at a premium specialist centre. Where you land in that range depends on which tooth needs treatment, what crown you choose afterwards, and whether your dentist uses modern rotary instruments or old-school hand files. Here's the full breakdown.

TL;DR — Expect ₹4,500–₹7,500 for a straightforward anterior tooth root canal with a mid-range crown at most Anna Nagar family clinics. Multi-canal molars and premium zirconia crowns push it to ₹12,000+.

The short answer for Chennai families

Root canal treatment (RCT) has become one of the most commoditised procedures in Indian dentistry. Every dentist can do it. The real price variation comes from three things: which of your 32 teeth needs the treatment, what quality of crown goes on top, and how much operating time the dentist spends per case.

At a family clinic like ours, we quote every root canal as RCT + crown together — because a root canal without a crown eventually fractures the tooth and wastes both the treatment and the money. Any dentist who quotes you only the RCT price without mentioning the crown is either forgetting the second half of the treatment or hiding it.

Cost by clinic tier in Chennai

Chennai's dental market has three broad tiers. The RCT quality across all three is largely the same for straightforward cases — the price gap mostly reflects location rent, doctor experience, and materials.

Clinic tierRoot canal (anterior)Root canal (molar)+ Crown
Budget neighbourhood clinic₹3,500 – ₹4,500₹5,000 – ₹7,000PFM crown ₹3,500+
Family/mid-market (like Dentora)₹4,500 – ₹6,000₹6,500 – ₹9,000Zirconia ₹9,500+
Premium specialist centre₹7,000 – ₹10,000₹10,000 – ₹15,000Zirconia/Emax ₹14,000+

None of these ranges are wrong — they buy different things. A budget clinic might have great skills but older equipment. A premium centre invests heavily in the newest rotary systems, apex locators, and CBCT scans. A family clinic aims for the sweet spot: modern equipment, transparent pricing, and a dentist who remembers your name.

Cost by tooth type

Not all teeth cost the same to treat, because they have wildly different numbers of root canals to clean.

  • Anterior teeth (incisors, canines)₹4,500 – ₹6,000. One canal, quick access, usually done in a single 45-minute visit.
  • Premolars₹5,500 – ₹7,500. One or two canals. Slightly more time.
  • Molars₹6,500 – ₹10,000. Three or four canals to find, clean, and seal. Often takes 60–90 minutes even for an experienced endodontist.
  • Wisdom tooth RCT — usually not recommended. If a wisdom tooth needs a root canal, extraction is often the smarter call, because the tooth doesn't do much chewing work anyway.

What actually changes your final quote

Beyond the tooth itself, these six variables move the price:

  1. How many canals — a "hot molar" can hide extra canals only visible on CBCT.
  2. Retreatment vs. first-time — an RCT on a tooth that was previously treated (and failed) is 30–50% more work.
  3. Crown material — PFM (₹3.5k), full metal (₹4.5k), zirconia (₹9.5k), Emax (₹14k). Zirconia is the current sweet spot for most patients.
  4. Post & core — if the tooth has lost significant structure, we build up a "core" with fibre post and composite before the crown. Adds ₹1,200–₹2,500.
  5. Sedation — some patients need nitrous oxide or (rarely) IV sedation. Adds ₹1,500–₹5,000.
  6. Follow-up X-rays — most clinics include the immediate post-op X-ray but charge for the 6-month check X-ray.

Watch out for — clinics that quote "root canal from ₹1,999" in Sulekha/Justdial ads. That price usually covers only the initial pulpectomy visit; the full RCT then costs ₹5,000+ across multiple visits, and the crown is billed separately.

Insurance & cashless — what to expect

Most Indian health insurance policies with hospitalisation cover include root canal treatment when it's medically necessary (severe pain, infection, trauma). Preventive or cosmetic RCT is not covered.

Practically, this means: if you're in pain and need an RCT to save the tooth, insurance usually pays. If you want an RCT on a tooth that could still be saved by a filling, you're paying out of pocket.

The 12 insurers that offer cashless treatment at most Chennai dental clinics: Star Health, ICICI Lombard, HDFC Ergo, Bajaj Allianz, Niva Bupa, Care Health, ManipalCigna, Aditya Birla Health, Tata AIG, SBI General, Reliance General, and Kotak Health. WhatsApp your policy number to the clinic before your visit and they'll pre-check your specific coverage.

Is a root canal actually painful?

No — this is the biggest myth in Indian dentistry. Modern root canal treatment is painless because:

  • Local anaesthesia numbs the tooth completely before we start
  • Rotary instruments (spinning nickel-titanium files) shape the canal in minutes, not hours
  • Apex locators tell us exactly where the tooth's root ends so we don't over-instrument

The pain that made you visit the dentist — that's what a root canal fixes. The procedure itself feels exactly like a filling: pressure, a little vibration, and then it's done.
